DISQUS

ChicWriter: Disqus vs. IntenseDebate

  • Damian Saunders · 2 months ago
I just started using Disqus and I'm more than happy with it.
Both systems are pretty good, it's a hard decision.
What it came down to for me was that Disqus allows me to edit comments and replies, and Intense Debate didn't, not without some messing about in Wordpress anyway.
I thought I preferred the ID interface but now I'm familiar with Disqus I think I'm sold.

I love Disqus, and I like how it keeps improving. It's great how they are integrating social media into commenting. I only want to have three more features:

    1. Disqus to work with Posterous
    2. Disqus to work with CommentLuv
    3. Ability to reply to comments from other social media sites
  • Rahsheen · 2 months ago
Interesting. That's my feature request list also...

    Great minds think alike =D

Have a little patience and Disqus will do all of those. I have read just the other day that Disqus is working on implementing new features that will provide more flexibility and compatibility with other system.

The Disqus support is just too cool. Gianni (or however his name is spelled, sorry for saying it wrong) commented just because he found a user that wasn't satisfied? That's what I call initiative. Most support services barely answer after they get three or more emails from the same person. Looking for unsatisfied customers and helping them is a new kind of support. One we would all like to see anywhere!

I'm at work so no video, so will respond to Rah's on here. =( That's one thing that I have noticed is that Disqus' Customer Service is super quick to respond to any issues or questions that you have. It's one of the reasons that I stick to it. Ian (Eye Bee) said that IntenseDebate screwed up his blog last week. It seems like Disqus seems to be a better app. I also like that they integrate Seesmic on there. I need to start using that function to respond to people.

I'm getting some great feedback on FriendFeed - http://tinyurl.com/c79c5d and http://tinyurl.com/chclyr

Anyone else think the same? Got me thinking after reading this, thx man.

Thanks! For some reason, I always try to pronounce things with a foreign
accent. Bizarre, I know! Disqus seems better for professional blogs, so
this is the main reason why I use it.
  • Tristan · 7 months ago
Do you know if Disqus will email commenters when a new comment is made? Or is it only when someone replies to your comment directly?
  • dcfemella · 1 month ago
    It will email you
  • Mesotheliomapatient · 7 months ago
    Wow !
Disqus + Seesmic = Rocks the commenting system ............

Thanks! I will have to say that I am now using Disqus for all of my sites. It has way more functionality than IntenseDebate. Additionally, the customer service is amazing.

disqus is best...I can't decide. I've used and loved Disqus in the past, but felt the data portability options were limited. I loved the data portability ...How it Compares to Disqus & Intense Debate..

It seems that Disqus is releasing a new format with better tools and flexibility http://friendfeed.com/louisgray/0027df14/check-...

    Discus wins hands down imo
  • dcfemella · 3 months ago
Yes, Disqus seems to be the better choice, and there upgrade is pretty cool (from what I've seen)
  • Noah David Simon · 3 months ago
I just installed intensedebate again. couldn't get video comments working. that I did not like.

your disqus comments are slow btw
  • dcfemella · 3 months ago
I upgraded to the new Disqus, and now my Twitter account won't connect. They are working on it. I really hope they fix it soon.
  • Noah David Simon · 3 months ago
I have chosen to reject them both.

when I want your opinion I will let you know with a friendfeed embed

also networked blogs comments I like because then I can see the comments on facebook. perhaps if companies explored this type of option I might be a return customer. I find it a better system to have networkedblogs manage comments so that I can control who is commenting. troll control is a key issue.

we are entering into many new options for comments. (another interesting option that is developing as of late is typepad which seems to interact with facebook nicely... better then the two mentioned in your post)

in the end what is keeping me from using intensedebate and disqus on my blogs is their poor support. at first it was good, but it became obvious as of late that they did not want to work with users who were not within Robert Scoble's community values. this became especially apparent while dealing with Disqus a few months ago when the settings changed with facebook connect and they didn't take the time to fix it with me. they complained about my blog, but my blog had been working with disqus and intensedebate successfully for two years. Equality and equivalence are very different things for me. not all bloggers support gay marriage and think a free society includes tolerance to religions that believe in murder of other faiths. I am very sad to say that if you do not kiss Robert Scoble's ass, then you will not be eligible to comment using the systems mentioned in your post. Just because some one says they are a moderate pederasts, doesn't mean they don't touch little boyz pee pee... in the same respect just because Disqus says they help who they disagree with, it doesn't mean they actually go the extra yard to work with the people who put together blogs.

I tried Networked Blogs, but it wasn't working for me. Do you have a certain amount of followers before you start seeing the benefit of it?
  • Noah David Simon · 3 months ago
you need four followers (I believe, but things change).

the best part of NB is that it protects from trolls because you can only follow so many blogs and therefor if there is a blog that you find irksome you will not follow it. this means the only comments you get are from either facebook fanpage fans or friends or viral spins from there. you can broadcast it on twitter also, but the exclusive NB feed is only seen by people who really "like"
your blog and follow you regularly.
you can also import digg and delicious into netblogs with feedburner for your rss. this usefull option allows me to have networkedblog comments on friendfeed posts because I bookmark stuff in ff with delicious or diigo.
  • Noah David Simon · 3 months ago
the sad truth of it all is you have to make a choice. if you like ff embeds then it is slow to have both disqus and the embeds. I have a javascript on each blogpost that allows people to find the correlating friendfeed post for each blog post... even if I don't have the ff embed.

obviously I am using disqus and intensedebate still... I am using it now on your blog... but on my own system I would prefer people to really use friendfeed

also note the typekey aka typepad has really improved. they are now a competing commenting system

Both are good, but disqus is better

and it would appear that DISQUS has won this round. It's a solid tool. Somtimes it better to just pick something and stick with it instead of chasing what is considered the best or newest.
  • dcfemella · 2 months ago
Disqus is pretty cool, and the upgrade is nice. It definitely has more functionality. Echo looks really cool as well, and you are able to respond to external social media reactions. However, like you said, it's better to stick with a solid tool than keep changing back and forth. I am content with Disqus, so I am sticking with it.

DIsqus had proven that it is one of the best commenting system, well just come to think of tracking back all your previous comments again.
  • Bhowmik Shah · 2 months ago
When i first was out looking for a commenting system a while back i picked on Disqus because of all the good things that i'd heard about it. After installing it and trying to import my comments i had serious trouble and i tweeted about it, and out of the blue i got a response from somebody at Disqus offering to help. I was stoked and loved it.

But sadly after a few tweet exchanges and promises of help coming and me waiting for more than 2 weeks without anything else coming from the Disqus camp i just gave up and switched to Intense Debate.

I have no doubt that Disqus is a good product but my first and only experience with their service has been bad.

So its interesting to hear you speak so highly of their support, Maybe its time i gave it another go.
  • dcfemella · 2 months ago
Sorry to hear that you had a hard time with their customer service. =( Definitely try it again. The new release is 100% better than the last one.
  • Bhowmik Shah · 2 months ago
Yep i think i am going to try it out again :) ... And i think i was more put off by the offer of help and then no help coming and nobody getting back to me. The product as such seemed decent enough to me.
  • dcfemella · 2 months ago
There is also Echo, but you have to pay $12/year for it. I was looking into it, but it seems like Disqus is ALMOST there and free. =D
